The house on the corner of Cardinal Place

Have you ever noticed the little plaque hidden in the brickwork of the house on the corner of Cardinal Place in the centre of Putney? It simply states ” Cardinal Place, The Beehive (off licence) 1889 -1993″

I had no idea that they had off-licences in 1889. “The Beehive” sounds more like a Victorian Pub than an off-licence to me, but apparently that was not the case. It was built as an off-licence.

Situated right on the corner of the street, I imagine it was once a traditional corner shop selling groceries, sweets and newspapers as well as alcohol. It would have been somewhere the local residents could pop in to get their basic essentials before the days of Ocado, and The Sunday Trading Act  changed the law in 1994.

Until then off-licences were one of the few places, apart from pubs and restaurants, that you could get alcohol on a Sunday. So maybe the owners of this property saw the writing on the wall, quite literally, and with the prospect of Sunday Trading opted for a different way of life?

Now it is a charming, private home, still in the centre of the historic part of Putney of course, but no longer playing such a public role in the community – Waitrose is just a short walk away and so there really is no need.
