Inspiration & Sources: Contemporary Interior Design by Caroline Browne

Contemporary Interior Design by Caroline Browne

The objective for this Esher home project was to increase the size of the kitchen and living areas by building a double height extension, strengthening the connection between the the house and garden and the woods beyond.

Caroline Browne, worked closely with the family to create a highly personalised interior design which takes into account every detail of the clients’ lifestyle, interests and desires. Caroline designed bespoke storage throughout (built by Proline Interiors) so that everything can be put away in it’s place leaving a calm and relaxing family space. The cohesive, contemporary scheme and subtle colour palette act as a foil to existing (and planned) art and sculpture collection.

The lighting was designed to be totally flexible with individual circuits and dimmable switches, to create a variety of moods in this family house, and achieving energy efficiency in-line with the latest regulations. Carefully colour controlled to avoid the blue toned light that can be an issue with energy efficient lighting, the lighting creates impact in the entertaining spaces and is adaptable for dinners, parties, screening movies and sports events.

The dramatic new oak and glass staircase combines with a modern chandelier (Bocci Series 14) to make a statement in the entrance hall leading to recessed lighting in the stair treads and banister. Recessed niches display a collection of bronze sculptures.

A hand-painted modern Shaker-style kitchen in shades of grey with on-trend copper accents was chosen for the kitchen and dining area. Bespoke storage was built to house a wine fridge, desk for homework and table-top items. The kitchen window folds back fully to allow things to be passed out onto the BBQ terrace beyond. A large, extending Ilse Crawford-designed table seats up to 12 people.

Caroline added a room divider to zone the sitting area from the dining area with a hole in the wall type fireplace visible from both sides. Technically very difficult to install gas or wood burner in this location with TV above, Caroline was inspired by a fireplace she had seen in a hotel in Berlin, and sourced an open fire complete with glowing logs, crackling sounds and water vapour “smoke” which was simple to fit.

The screening room was designed to house a huge TV and bespoke bar which doubles as a mixing desk for music at parties. Dimmable, colour-changing Philips Hue Smart lighting was chosen to create a party atmosphere, controlled by a mobile phone app.

The client wanted the master bedroom suite to have a luxury, hotel feel in layout, finish and functionality. Layout was planned to take advantage of the view across the garden to the woods beyond. The bed was placed centrally underneath a roof light for view of the night sky. A pop up TV was installed in a custom unit at the end of the bed. Bespoke double sided storage units were built in at the bedsides with low level night and reading lights. A chest of drawers was added on the back for lots of storage and to separate the bedroom area from the ensuite shower room and dressing room behind. A custom-designed walk-in dressing room was designed to exact specifications to match the client’s storage needs exactly.

An additional shower room was installed on the ground floor so that the client wouldn’t disturb the rest of the family when working getting ready for work after working out early in the morning.

A comfortable and contemporary family home, the calm colour scheme and carefully planned design links the natural setting to the interior providing the perfect environment for this family’s busy lifestyle, from quick and efficient routines getting ready for school and work, through to moments of calm at the weekends and entertaining with friends.
