Decorcafe Conversation. It is Never Too Late! Ceramicist Joanna Ling Shares Her Story
Until recently Joanna Ling was working at a leading auction house. She had been there for more than thirty years and had loved every second. But she had always had a yearning to try her hand at ceramics. Four years ago she enrolled on a course at Richmond Adult Learning Centre. She was looking forward to what she thought would be her new hobby. In October 2018 her hobby became her new business. Now, less than seven months later, she has already met with some notable succcess. How did she do that?
Until the day we met she didn’t even have her own kiln. It was sitting waiting by the front door as I went in. And yet she has sold her pieces at local events, been commissioned by experienced collectors and a national museum. In seven months! Without her own kiln!
Since our interview, the kiln has been installed in Joanna’s beautiful studio in her garden, funded by the proceeds of her ceramic sales and she is working hard on assorted commissions. There is no question that some of this success is down to the network of contacts that she had already built up in the art world over the years. But none of it would have happened if she hadn’t been prepared to step into the unknown, and she has most definitely made the most of every opportunity.
This conversation recorded below, is designed for you to get to know Joanna a little better and to learn from her experience and ideas. To get started I just made the recording on my i-phone so the sound quality isn’t perfect, but we would love your feedback. The question is do you find the content interesting?
