About Joanna Ling
Joanna Ling is a London based ceramicist working mainly with porcelain, either hand built or thrown.
In a world of mass production, she feels it important to cherish the singular which is why every piece she creates is unique and made to order. She particularly likes to include elements in her work that reflect something about the person they are for or the setting they will be in.
As a child who grew up in the countryside, the fields and woods of England deeply imbue Joanna’s work – be it in the forms her pieces take or the decorative elements she uses.
Her clients include interior designers, collectors, businesses and galleries.
We Love Joanna Because…
Joanna’s designs have a natural quality that is almost therapeutic in their quietly calm aesthetic. Her artistic interpretation tends towards minimalism and simplicity and therefore her pieces look at home in most interiors.
More about Joanna Ling
After working in the art world for over thirty years, where she was surrounded by beautiful objects on a daily basis, she had a craving to create her own work. She had always been drawn to ceramics so it felt only natural to choose clay as her medium.
Joanna ran the Cecil Beaton archive at Sotheby’s for many years and the photographer’s sense of style and designer’s eye have been a great inspiration for her ceramics.
I’m new to Jo and her ceramics, but having seen some on display at a Sotheby’s exhibition I was moved to find out more. I’m so pleased I did and am the proud owner of a green ‘hatch’ marked green platter, which I look at every day. And more than that, I use every day. I love that a familiar object, made by hand, can turn an everyday ritual into something far more gratifying.
I spotted Joanna’s unique pieces at Sotheby’s Staff Showcase in 2016, she then won the first prize the following year. Each piece is inspired by the natural world and she captures the different facets of nature by using different building methods, clays and glazes. She cherishes the singular in a world of mass production. I am lucky enough to own an earthenware bowl which is admired by many. It captures my love for the sea. I hope to acquire more pieces in the future. Joanna is certainly one to watch!
Like Jo, I also worked at Sotheby’s and came to know Jo through the ceramics that she exhibited at the staff exhibition.
Having left Sotheby’s to launch my own business as a calligrapher and stationer (ERA Calligraphy), I decided to create unique personalised Christmas decorations to sell throughout the festive season. I envisaged adding calligraphy to a flat ceramic bauble shape, which is where Jo came in.
Collaborating with Jo was a fantastic experience from start to finish. We designed the shape that the decorations should take, and Jo offered her expertise suggesting various techniques that she could use to create the decorations. At our first meeting, Jo had created a range of samples for us to review. We chose our favourites and Jo got to work producing all of the decorations that I had requested.
The finish and quality of Jo’s work is beautiful and complemented my gold lettering perfectly. Each and every decoration that I offered for sale was sold, which I think speaks for itself!
I’m already looking forward to working with Jo again!
