About Melanie Porter

Melanie first drew attention from international press and clients for her hand knitted upholstery, creating one of a kind chairs with surface texture and pattern, precisely positioned and felted into panels for each individual chair.  Since then she has spearheaded the trend for giant knitting, hand spinning her own yarns which are knitted into oversized blankets and cushions and creating exquisite light strings for decoration and gifts.

Everything, from the knitted upholstery panels and individually hand crocheted buttons to the spinning of the giant wool and light strings, is done by hand. The result of this incredibly labour-intensive process is a stunning and unique work of art, destined to be a future family heirloom.

Born into a family of craftsmen Melanie still uses the many of the tools used for generations in her family, having learned upholstery from her grandfather, sewing and tapestry from her grandmother and spinning and weaving from her mother. (Her father is an accountant which has its own advantages).

Trained in fashion design at the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College Melanie worked as a designer for fashion houses in London and Italy for 10 years before setting up her own eponymous brand. Melanie now works in London around her growing family on a ready to buy collection or on bespoke commission.
